Records That Refuse to Fall: Kentucky’s Track & Field Legends

In the world of high school athletics, few accomplishments stand the test of time like these long-standing track and field records. Jesse Stuart's boys' shot put record from 1969 and Maxine Graham's girls' long jump record from 1975 are two examples of strong, standing records that continually challenge new generations of athletes.

Jesse Stuart, when asked how he felt about still holding the shot put record, expressed a mixture of surprise and readiness for change: "It's just been long enough, you know," Stuart says.

On the other hand, Maxine Graham takes pride in her lasting legacy, stating, "Oh no, I'm feeling fantastic about that," when asked how she feels about her long jump record remaining unbroken.

Kelley Bowman, similar to Graham and Stuart, also holds an unbroken record in high school track and field: she set the state record for the girls' high jump in 2000. Her journey into the world of high jumping is an inspiring narrative of accidental opportunity leading to lasting achievements, beginning not with an overt passion for the sport, but rather by chance.

She reflects, “I was in, I think, seventh grade, and I got thrown in it at a meet because one of the girls wasn't feeling well...and I ended up being good at it."

Bowman recalls her early years, saying, "I was always fast... I didn't know I could jump until seventh grade.”

Bowman's record-setting high jump in high school laid a foundation that propelled her to the University of Louisville and beyond. Her post-collegiate career, though brief, is a testament to the influential role of high school sports in fostering professional opportunities. As Bowman shares, “After college I went pro for a year, and I...was kind of sponsored by Adidas.”

Despite injuries ending her professional career early, Bowman’s journey—from an accidental high jump competitor to an international athlete—is a testament to the lasting impact of high school sports. As she marks 25 years since setting her record, she, too, is surely reflecting on the path that led her there.
