ALL ACCESS PASS: Lost Glory: Kentucky's Brief Stint as a Tennis Powerhouse

The Louisville International Tennis Classic had a short but impactful journey. It all started in 1969 when brothers Sam and John English realized the potential for a large tennis event in Louisville. That next year in 1970 the Louisville International Tennis Classic was born. Unfortunately, it would only last until 1979, due to funding issues, but it still made a large impact on those who were involved.

Harold Solomon, a two-time winner of the Louisville International Tennis Classic, spoke fondly of the southern hospitality that he experienced during his time there. Solomon has a history of playing in Kentucky and recalls always enjoying his time spent here due to the warmth of the people. Solomon was grateful for his time played at the Louisville International Tennis Classic and remembers it fondly.

Bob Domine, a Louisville T.V. sportscaster, also remembers the event fondly. He worked with the Louisville International Tennis Classic from 1973 until it ended and speaks about the riveting play experienced. Domine recalls one match that went on for six hours. He also recalls seeing a young John McEnroe at that same match.

One of the English brothers, John, recants the events that led up to the ultimate end of the Louisville International Tennis Classic. John explains the lack of big sponsorships and too small of venues, unfortunately did not allow the tournament to continue running.
