There are some sports records that have stood the test of time and are likely never to be broken. These impressive demonstrations of skill and determination are inspiring and will continue to do so as long as they stand.
One of the longest standing high school football records in the state of Kentucky was set in 1913. In a game between Louisville Male High School and Tharp High School, Louisville Male score 149 points. This impressive feat has lasted over 100 years and is likely to never be broken.
Just three years later in 1917, Owensboro High School played Henderson High School in western Kentucky. In that game, Owensboro scored 20 touchdowns. While this is another extraordinary feat, it still does not come close to the most points scored record set in 1913 by Louisville Male High School.
Frank Jones, who played at Bath County High School in eastern Kentucky, set his own record in 1969. He ran a total of 3300 yards in a single season. The next closest player was Shaun Alexander in 1994. Alexander was a running back in Boone County, who later played for Alabama and then the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL. Jones was very proud of his record, and even made sure that Alexander was aware of who held the record. Jones recalls meeting Alexander while he was still playing at Alabama, and Jones showed Alexander the record. JJ Jude of Johnson Central High School would later go on to take the number two spot above Shaun Alexander.
Fort Thomas Highlands from northern Kentucky set a record from 2007 to 2012 by winning six straight championships in its class. The record had previously been held by Boyle County, who won five championships in a row from 1999 to 2003. Boyle County are looking to take back the number spot. They won the championship in 2021, 2022, and 2023, with hopes to continue their run this year. While Boyle County has an impressive record, they have not come close to breaking the record of most seasons of undefeated football. That record is held by Ashland Blazer High School back in 1926 to 1931, when they went six consecutive seasons going undefeated.
Bill Byrd of Corbin High School also had an outstanding record that was set in the 1950’s. Byrd scored a total of 66 points in a single game. Unfortunately for Byrd, his record did not stand long, because in 1962 Herbie Phelps of Old Kentucky Home High School scored 68 points. While Phelps denies hearing about it, there were rumors that people in the stands would bet on how many touchdowns he would score when he played. Even Byrd’s record would not last long, because in 1968 Don Gullet from McKell High School would score 72 points.
These records demonstrate the hard work from these men, and are likely to stand the test of time, to hopefully honor their hard work and dedication.
